Basic Kitchen Design Principles to Live By

  1. The overall space is usually a deciding factor in specific disign considerations. The space and the feasible changes in that space, both constrain and allow us to do certain things and determine how far our creativity can carry.

In terms of specifics, while most kitchen designers will tell you to follow the "Triangle Principle" (whereby the fridge -stove- sink form a triangle) this is not always possible. For example, if the fridge blocks beneficial light or easy access becomes difficult, the triangle principle may not be feasible..

  2. There are widespread ideas, such as "the microwave should be in an upper cabinet" or some of the common views concerning space saver range hoods, which are often just myths. Microwaves should, in fact, be in an area for easy and safe access, such as below the countertop. This way you do not have to reach above your head for hot food. However, practically speaking, space may not always allow you to have a microwave below the counter.

  3. It is noteworthy that one should always have ample counterspace on either side of the cooking surface (range or cooktop), and whenever possible, the cooking surface should not be at the end of a cabinet run.

  4. One of the most important things to consider when designing a kitchen is the importance of a healthy kitchen. Always keep in mind the height of the counter and the amount of bending and stretching that takes place. Ergonomically this can be taxing. Consider the age of the person operating in the working area on a daily basis. Often minor changes can be taken to minimise discomfort and create a well functioning, comfortable and convenient kitchen!
